I was musing on this earlier today. The response we get most often from a young person just finishing their first trip with us has been "I can't believe the amount of responsibility you gave us!" Sadly, that's not the response most adults would expect from a teenager. Teens however, are capable of great things if we only believe in them and give them a chance! When given duties and responsibilities that can have severe negative consequences if not performed well, young people shine. They know the world will not come to an end if they don't clean up their room at home. But, when steering and navigating our sailing vessel Boundless through a narrow cut between islands with visible rocks to the left and an unseen underwater reef to the right, I've had 80lb, 13 year old's masterfully take us through to safe anchorage on the other side! In the thirty years we've been taking young people on hands-on, educational sailing adventures, I have never had to step in and take the wheel from a young person regardless of difficulty. Don't give a young person easy tasks expecting them to grow. Instead, give them something difficult to do, then get out of their way. They will amaze you! Capt. Jeff
